DevHub Africa is a social impact organization working across rural Ghana to equip smallholder farmers with the knowledge they need to grow reliable harvests, adapt to climate change, and sustain their families. Operating in Rural Accra, the Brong Ahafo, Northern, Central, and Upper West regions, DevHub’s field mentors travel from village to village translating complex agronomy into day-to-day decisions farmers can actually act on.

With limited staff and vast distances, DevHub needed a way to extend its reach: a way to give every mentor, and ultimately every farmer, access to high-quality, localized farming guidance, even when extension officers could not be physically present.

The Challenge:

Smallholder farmers in rural Ghana face a perfect storm of constraints:

• Critical agronomic knowledge is trapped in training manuals and the heads of a small number of field mentors.
• Farmers often have low literacy, requiring simple, spoken, culturally grounded explanations instead of dense technical language.
• Weather patterns and soil conditions vary sharply by community, yet most “generic” advice does not account for local context.
• When crops fail, farmers experience real emotional and financial distress, and mentors are expected to support both productivity and morale, often without enough time or tools.

DevHub Africa needed a solution that could:

• Deliver accurate, curriculum-aligned agronomic advice in simple language.
• Reflect village-level realities, including soil, rainfall, local languages, and markets.
• Support mentors during live training without slowing them down.
• Respond with empathy when farmers described loss, fear, or burnout.

The Avatar Buddy® Solution:

DevHub Africa partnered with Avatar Buddy® to deploy AgroBoost Buddy, a function-specific AI Solution designed as a rural agricultural Buddy for mentors and the farmers they serve.

Instead of drawing from generic internet data, AgroBoost Buddy’s guidance is grounded in DevHub’s own curriculum, community stories, local soil, rainfall data, and real on-the-ground conditions.

Human-centric, culturally aware design
AgroBoost Buddy is configured to use warm, plain language that matches rural Ghanaian norms. When a mentor types, “My farmer’s field burned and she’s feeling hopeless,” the Buddy responds first with empathy and validation, then with practical recovery and prevention steps, mirroring the emotional intelligence Avatar Buddy® builds into all of its AI Solutions.

The Beta Test: Real Questions, Real Farms

Between October 6 and 26, DevHub Africa ran a controlled beta test of AgroBoost Buddy with:

• More than 20 active field mentors
• Farmers in Mekoda, Srafa, Bouti, Lamfiaso, Weywa, Lilixe, and nearby communities

Mentors submitted real-time queries based on:

• Curriculum topics from DevHub’s ACTs manuals
• Village-specific soil profiles and rainfall patterns
• Actual issues farmers were facing in the current season

They also evaluated AgroBoost Buddy on user experience, cultural tone, emotional intelligence, village recognition, weather reasoning, and suitability for low-literacy audiences.

Results: Faster Learning, Real-World Achievement

Even in beta, the impact was clear.

High-quality agronomic recommendations
Mentors reported that AgroBoost Buddy’s rotation plans, soil fertility suggestions, and conservation tillage techniques aligned with DevHub’s training curriculum and matched what they would recommend themselves, only faster and always available.

Strong contextual reasoning where local data existed
When given village names and regional context, AgroBoost Buddy incorporated local rainfall seasons and nearby markets into its guidance, making recommendations feel rooted in the realities of each community rather than in abstract models.

Emotional intelligence in moments of crisis
In tests where a mentor described a farmer whose field had burned and who “felt very down,” AgroBoost Buddy responded with calm, compassionate language that acknowledged the loss before offering clear next steps and fire-prevention strategies. Female mentors in particular highlighted this as a breakthrough, seeing real potential for supporting farmer resilience, not just yields.

A powerful engine for low-literacy training
Mentors found AgroBoost Buddy especially helpful for planning trainings with farmers who cannot read or write. The Buddy’s ability to simplify technical concepts into short, concrete steps, and to suggest appropriate local languages, made it a valuable behind-the-scenes companion for session design.

Key Outcomes:

• Accurate, curriculum-aligned advice: Agronomic guidance matched DevHub’s ACTs manuals and was validated by field mentors across four regions.
• Context-aware recommendations: Where village-level data was present in the Data Vault, AgroBoost Buddy tailored advice to local soils, rainfall, and markets.
• Enhanced emotional support: The Buddy handled sensitive scenarios such as crop loss and burnout with empathy first, then practical guidance, supporting both mental well-being and productivity.
• Increased mentor capacity: Mentors could lean on AgroBoost Buddy for on-demand questions and training design, freeing time for deeper relationship-building with farmers.

Strategic Impact:

The AgroBoost Buddy beta demonstrates how Avatar Buddy’s Managed AI-as-a-Service and Data Vault approach can extend human expertise across difficult-to-reach geographies.
